Good Afternoon Bearcats!

We hope to see everyone this coming Thursday night, September 3rd at our annual Back To School Night.  This is an excellent opportunity for parents and guardians to get involved with your child’s education, tour the campus, visit classrooms and hear directly from teachers about the exciting things happening in each subject area.   The event will kick off at 5:30pm Thursday and we hope to see you all here. 

Another way that parents can get involved is by participating in our School Site Council.  This is a group of about 10 adults who are invited to help set the priorities of our school and develop our annual Site Plan for Student Achievement.  This council typically meets seven times per year, three times in the first semester and four times in the second semester.  All of the meetings are at PRHS and they bring together parents, students, teachers and administrators to discuss the challenges and opportunities that our school is facing.  If anyone is interested please contact Jilian Shumate ( jmshumategunderson@pasoschools.org ).

Lastly from me for this week, there have been countless ‘wins’ over these past two weeks as we’ve welcomed our Bearcats back to campus.  However, one source of frustration for some I know has been the schedule change process.  

Please know that our Counseling team is amazing and they are working through a sizable number of schedule change requests.  We build the Master Schedule every spring based upon the course selection process that launches in January.  At that time our counseling team gives every student the opportunity to indicate their course preferences.  We then build individual student schedules based upon those choices.  Nearly 800 students this fall have submitted schedule change requests and we appreciate your patience as we work through those requests.  If any student is still considering a schedule change request please make sure to submit that through the QR code on the doors of the Counseling Office, by Friday of this week. That is the deadline for elective changes in the Fall semester.

Thank you, everyone, for your patience with the schedule change process.  We know that most schedule changes have already been entered into the request form (and we have received nearly 900 requests since student schedules were released at Orientation).

So this is just a reminder that this Friday, September 4 is the deadline for students to make a request for changing their schedule.  

All students who have already used the request form can be confident that they have made the deadline.  Counselors are diligently following up with all of those requests.  Thank you again for your patience.

Off to a Great Start! It has been wonderful seeing our students return with so much energy! We are off to a fantastic start this school year, and we want to keep this momentum going. As routines settle, here is a quick reminder of how much regular attendance counts. 

Did you know that missing just 2 days of school a month... 

* Adds up to 18 days a year—that is 10% of the entire school year lost. 

* Makes reading harder, especially for kindergarteners and 1st graders trying to reach grade-level milestones. 

* Creates learning gaps that can leave students feeling stressed and overwhelmed when catching up. 

Every day builds confidence, strong friendships, and key academic skills. Thank you for partnering with us to make daily attendance a priority—let’s keep up the great work!

Student Transportation Device Safety Reminder, In response to the growing use of personal transportation devices by students, and as part of our ongoing efforts to keep our campuses safe, we would like to remind families of the expectations that apply at all PRJUSD schools. 

Students who ride a bicycle, scooter, e-bike, e-scooter, skateboard, or roller skates to school are expected to follow all applicable laws and safety requirements. This includes rules related to speed, age, licensing, equipment, and the use of a properly fitted and fastened bicycle helmet. 

Personal transportation devices that do not meet legal requirements for use on public roads or paths may not be permitted on school campuses. Please remember that school parking lots are also considered part of the school campus. 

For everyone’s safety, students may not ride personal transportation devices on campus during the school day. Once they arrive on campus, students should walk their device to the designated parking area and securely lock or store it. Thank you for helping us keep our campuses safe for all students.

One final reminder that our Dress Code expectations will remain in place for the duration of this Academic Year.
