  • The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office provides young men and women, 15-21 years of age, the opportunity to experience law enforcement first hand through the Sheriff’s Explorer program. Additionally, the Explorer will learn about the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office and the different job classifications of its employees.   Explorers will have many opportunities to apply their training as they participate in community events, Explorer competitions, and Sheriff’s Office functions.

  • In many larger cities, aspiring firefighters can benefit from Fire Explorer Programs, which provide invaluable hands-on experience and training. Unfortunately, Paso Robles City does not currently offer such a program. However, eager students interested in exploring a firefighting career can take advantage of the department's Ride-Along opportunities.

You can participate in the Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services First-in Response Experience (F.I.R.E.) Program. The program will include riding in a fire department vehicle to routine and/or emergency calls.

This program provides firsthand insight into the daily responsibilities and challenges faced by firefighters. For those interested in participating, more information can be obtained by contacting the department directly. It is important to note that parents must sign a waiver for students to engage in this immersive experience.

You must be 16 or older to participate and complete a Ride-Along Request Form (PDF). Persons between 16 and 18 years of age must have this form signed by a parent or guardian prior to any participation. Once filled out and signed, the form should either be

faxed to (805) 237-4138 or mailed to:

  • Civil Air Patrol’s cadet program transforms youth into dynamic Americans and aerospace leaders through a curriculum that focuses on leadership, aerospace, fitness, and character. As cadets participate in these four elements, they advance through a series of achievements, earning honors and increased responsibilities along the way. Many of the nation’s astronauts, pilots, engineers, and scientists first explored their careers through CAP.

Central Coast Group 4 squadrons consist of senior members (18 years of age and older) and cadet members (between 12 and 21 years). There are three types of Squadrons, Senior, Composite, and Cadet, that contribute to all three of the core Civil Air Patrol programs: Aerospace Education, the Cadet Program, and Emergency Services.

PR Composite Sq 446 is a newly chartered squadron. We are located at the Estrella Warbirds Museum.

YW began in 2011 with 6 high school students and now draws from all over SLO North County, serving about 500 youth from 6 to 24 years old.

YouthWorks operates year-round, and the program is free to all participants. Middle school and high school youth learn the ways of the workplace as they are scheduled for weekly paid work shifts assigned by our Community Services Team. They develop skills in farming, janitorial tasks, cooking, customer service, cash handling, tutoring, childcare, office jobs, and computers. Using cascading mentorship, the adults oversee all operations while the older students train and tutor each lower age level.
