Parental Involment

Parental support plays a crucial role in the success of high school students, but it must strike a delicate balance.  Parents should aim to foster a nurturing environment where students feel empowered to take responsibility for their own learning. This can be achieved by showing genuine interest in their academic pursuits, such as discussing their goals and achievements, without micromanaging their daily tasks. By encouraging problem-solving skills and celebrating effort rather than just results, parents can help students develop resilience and self-confidence. Ultimately, the key lies in providing guidance and support while allowing students the freedom to explore, make mistakes, and learn from their experiences, thus preparing them for future challenges both in and out of the classroom.

Parents can best support their students, keeping communication open, and encouraging focus on goals. Regularly checking personal and student emails for both parents and students is crucial for staying informed and organized about student activities, making sure students are on track to graduation and homework or activity deadlines. Emails and Parentsquare are key communication tools. Students should have their own personal email address and password by very latest senior year. During senior year they will need it to apply to colleges , financial aid and scholarships. They will lose access to their school email account and google drive after graduation. Having their own email account at an earlier age allows them to develop the habit of checking it regularly and learning to differentiate between spam and important emails.

Promoting Independence - Encouraging students to act independently and manage their responsibilities, rather than parents completing tasks for them, helps develop essential life skills. This includes Fieldtrip Paperwork, asking Teachers for help, Testing sign up,  and later in senior year College Applications, Scholarship Applications, Financial Aid Applications and testing sign up! This preparation is crucial as privacy laws like the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) typically restrict parental access to college related information without student consent.

Gradually practicing those skills as they move through their high school years is important for their personal development, academic success, and preparation for future challenges. By honing abilities such as critical thinking, time management, and effective communication, students not only enhance their educational journey but also build a strong foundation for lifelong learning and professional growth.

Grade-level newsletters serve as an essential communication tool, providing parents and students with an overview about the upcoming school year, ensuring everyone stays informed and engaged.
