Seal of Civic Engagement

On Tuesday, September 26th, 2023, the PRJUSD Board of Trustees passed Resolution #24-01, establishing the criteria for a student to earn the State Seal of Civic Engagement in Paso Robles Joint Unified School District.

Paso Robles Joint Unified School District formally adopts the California State Seal of Civic Engagement whereby, beginning with the graduating Class of 2023, students, who meet the following criteria, as outlined by the California Department of Education and approved by the State Board of Education on September 10, 2020, will earn the Seal on their diplomas:


  • Be engaged in academic work in a productive way.
    • As measured by being on track to complete all graduation requirements with a total weighted GPA of 2.7 or higher or on track to earn a Certificate of Completion

  • Demonstrate a competent understanding of U.S. and California constitutions; functions and governance of local governments; tribal government structures and organizations; the role of the citizen in a constitutional republic; and democratic principles, concepts, and processes.
    • As measured by earning a B- or better in US History/AP US History and Government/AP Government/AG Government -or- by passing a United States Constitution examination

  • Participate in one or more informed civic engagement projects that address real-world problems and require students to identify and inquire into civic needs or problems, consider varied responses, take action, and reflect on efforts.
    • As measured by the completion of the Student Civic Action Summary portion of the district application

  • Demonstrate civic knowledge, skills, and dispositions through self-reflection.
    • As measured by the completion of the Student Self-Reflection portion of the district application

  • Exhibit character traits that reflect civic-mindedness and a commitment to positively impact the classroom, school, community, and/or society.
    • As measured by a review of faculty, staff, or community recommendation letters or evaluations

To apply for the State Seal of Civic Engagement, students must complete the following:

  1. State Seal of Civic Engagement Application, including Civic Action Summary and Student Self-Reflection
  2. Provide two Letters of Recommendation
  3. Provide a copy of the student's unofficial transcript demonstrating minimum requirements.

In April, the State Seal of Civic Engagement Review Committee will meet to review received applications.  The review committee will include a counselor, a site administrator, a district administrator, a social science faculty member, and one additional faculty member.  Students will be notified if they have received the State Seal by the end of April.
